Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)

The Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) is a specialized, highly trained and disciplined unit that is comprised of officers from both the Patrol and Criminal Investigations Divisions. They are responsible for safe execution of high risk search and arrest warrant operations, critical incident situations such as barricaded persons or hostages, surveillance, and traffic and crowd control during special events.

How The SWAT Unit Began

A need for such a unit was realized in 1994 and the current SWAT Team was formed. All unit members are highly dedicated officers who are required to remain in outstanding physical condition and train together on a monthly basis.

Goals

The goal of the SWAT Team is to assist with a peaceful resolution of issues involving potentially violent encounters. Since both Crisis Negotiation Team’s and the SWAT Team's goals are so closely intertwined, the two units train together regularly.

Training

Officers who join the SWAT Team must first attend a basic SWAT school, and subsequently attend specialized training throughout the year.
