age friendly - rowlettAccording to the AARP Policy Book, a livable community is one that is safe and secure, has affordable and appropriate housing and transportation options, and has supportive community features and services. Once in place, those resources enhance personal independence; allow residents to age in place; and foster residents’ engagement in the community’s civic, economic and social life.  The AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities provides a process that can help communities address physical and social barriers preventing people from being as engaged in community life as they want to be.

AARP, through the Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities, provides support for communities who want to develop policies, systems, services, products and technologies that:

  • Promote health and build and maintain physical and mental capacity across the course of life.
  • Enable people, even when experiencing capacity loss, to continue to do the things they value.

To gauge the livability of communities, use this web-based tool, the AARP Livability Index, to quantify the degree to which Rowlett meets people’s needs, regardless of their age, income, physical ability, ethnicity, and other factors.

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the  8 Domains of Livability  influencing the health and quality of life for older adults. Creating an action plan is vital in ensuring that an age-friendly community initiative will make the community a better place for residents of all ages, abilities, racial and ethnic identifications and socioeconomic levels. This action plan is a resource guide of day-to-day work.
