Reading Your Water Meter
There are several reasons why you might want to locate and read your water meter. First, you might be interested to know how much water you use in a day. By reading your meter at the beginning and end of a day, you can compare the two reads to tell how much water you and your family used. Learn more about helping your meter reader.
The second reason is to check for leaks. To do this, turn off all the taps in your house, and then look at your meter. If the meter is still turning, chances are you have a leak somewhere.

Here are tips to help you find and read your water meter:
- Locate your meter. It is generally located near the curb in front of your home or place of business in a direct line with your main outside faucet. The meter will be housed in a cast-iron or plastic box usually marked "water".
- Remove the lid carefully using a large screwdriver or a similar tool by lifting the lid off.Be careful not to disconnect the wiring attaching the meter to the MXU (the small black box on the underside of the lid). Please do not use your fingers. Examine the area around the meter to make sure there are no harmful insects or animals.
- Read your meter. City meters measure water in gallons. Readings are taken from the numbers representing the gallons of water used since the meter was installed. This number goes to one decimal place (for example, 99,999.8). The current reading on your bill will be taken from the numbers shown in bold and italics.
- Subtract your previous read from your current read and add two zeros to the end. This will be your total consumption from the last reading.
