National Police WeekThis is National Police Week, recognized in the United States since 1962 and honored by Proclamation at the May 3 City Council Meeting. It is through this program that the nation can be alerted to the dangers of police work and to the dedication of the men and women that serve in this occupation.
Recognizing law enforcement personnel during this time each year also brings attention to the surviving family members of slain officers and to the National Police Officers Memorial, located in Washington, DC. Each year the names of law enforcement personnel who were killed in the line of duty are engraved on the National Police Officers Memorial. Commemorating National Police Week is not only a way to honor fallen law enforcement personnel, but also helps acquaint the community with our Rowlett Police Department's dedication, commitment, and personal sacrifice to ensure Rowlett is a safe community.

Is This a Code Violation?Stagnant swimming pools and stagnant bodies of water are in violation of Rowlett Code of Ordinances, Sec 22-123 and IPMC Section 303.1 Stagnant swimming pools can become not only a safety concern due to lack of water clarity but also a public health concern. Stagnant water is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitos, which can harbor mosquito-borne diseases, such as West Nile Virus.
Stagnant swimming pools can produce thousands of mosquitos in just a few weeks, but did you know just a small capful of water could produce hundreds of mosquitos? Any water standing for more than 4 days can be a potential breeding ground for mosquitos. Other items that can hold water include:
• Gutters • Tires • Tree holes • Birdbaths • Fountains • Containers • Rain barrels • Tarps • Toys • Tire ruts • Flowerpots
Eliminating the source of standing water is the best mosquito prevention, but sometimes that is not possible. In these situations, mosquito larvicide dunks, such as Summit BTI, can be used. The dunks distribute bacterial toxins that kill mosquito larvae and last up to 30 days. Visit Rowlett Community Development Department, 5702 Rowlett Rd, to pick up some free mosquito dunks. For more information, contact Neighborhood Services at 972-412-6283
