Communication Board at Kids Kingdom Playground

Image of the communications board at Kids Kingdom Playground

Last week, the City of Rowlett Parks and Recreation staff installed this Communication Board, created by Barbara Fernandes with Smarty Symbols. This board will help guests at the Kids Kingdom Playground communicate with their parents or peers while they’re enjoying the park.

What exactly is a Communication Board? It is a tool that will provide all children a better opportunity to communicate with parents and their peers. Symbols on the new equipment are arranged in squares on a grid. They include the alphabet, numbers, shapes, and core words. Words such as hug, go, bye, and hi are featured on the board along with specific features that the children can play on while at the Kids Kingdom playground.

A special thanks goes out to Barbara Fernandes, CEO of Smarty Symbols for bringing the first of its kind to our Kids Kingdom playground. This is such a fantastic addition to this playground as it sees high volumes of youth throughout the year.

Officer Gomez Jr.

Over the weekend, citizen Leo Lane was leaving Walmart and captured this photo of Officer Gomez and Public Works team member Robert Savva working on rescuing a kitten from a storm drain.

Mr. Lane shared on Nextdoor that he and Officer Gomez were working on getting the storm drain lid opened, and weren’t able to fit into the drain. Robert Savva from Public Works came on the scene and jumped in like it was his favorite swimming hole. Because of the collaboration between citizens, City of Rowlett Public Works and Rowlett Police
Department, the kitten was successfully rescued.

Thank you to all who were involved! Because of their dedication and hard work, the Kitten was adopted by one of our dispatchers, and they named him Gomez Jr.
