World Honeybee Day – August 20

As a Bee City, we love helping raise awareness of the important role honeybees play in our ecosystem.

Here are a few fun facts about honeybees:
• Honeybees pollinate plants throughout the growing season.
• Honeybees are the most well-known solitary bees; however, they represent a tiny fraction of all bee species. Worldwide, there are an estimated 20,000 species of bees, and approximately 3,600 bee species are native to the United States and Canada alone.
• Most solitary bee species, like honeybees, are not aggressive and many are stingless.
• Honeybees are pollinators which mean that while gathering the nectar to create honey they’re also fertilizing flowering plants. What is pollination exactly? Pollination is the transfer of pollen from an anther to a stigma.
• According to the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, pollinators including honeybees provide an ecological service necessary for the reproduction of over 85% of the world’s flowering plants, including more than two-thirds of the world’s crop species.
• The United States alone grows more than 100 crops that either need or benefit from pollinators. The economic value of these native pollinators is estimated at $3 billion per year in the U.S.

Visit the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation to learn more about pollinators and The Pollinator Conservation Program.

Image of a yellow Catalytic converter

Catalytic Converter Thefts

For those that don’t know, this is a catalytic converter. During the COVID years, It’s become all the rage to steal these by cutting them off the bottom of unsuspecting victims’ vehicles, making them sound like unstable race cars when they get started up in the morning. It takes a good cutter about 20 seconds to separate one from the vehicle and a bad cutter will still jack it up enough to require a full replacement.
