New City of Rowlett Hours

Hours at City of Rowlett offices and some facilities have changed. As a service organization, adapting to the needs of our customers is paramount. The longer hours will enhance in-person service opportunities for residents who may experience challenges with the traditional 5:00 p.m. closing time. This strategic shift also provides the City a competitive edge to recruit and retain the best and brightest employees in a highly competitive job market.

Rowlett Vet - Donald Van Handel

Recently, we celebrated the life and service Donald Van Handel, one of the oldest veterans in our community, by honoring and recognizing him as our 23rd Rowlett Vet! Born July 23, 1923, Don served honorably in the United States Marine Corps. discharging at the rank of Master Sergeant. At the age of 18, when determining which branch of the military he was going to join, he and his best friend, Bob Johnson, were driving home in Appleton, Wisconsin and made a deal. If they made it home safely, they would join the Coast Guard – if they got into an accident, they would join the Marines. We now know how that went – they both joined the Marines. While stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Mojave, CA. he qualified for the Navy Pilot Training Program and did his carrier qualification in Corpus Christi. Also while stationed in Mojave, he met his wife, LaVena – they were married for 72 years until her passing in 2015. The Master Sergeant served twice – once with the Marine Corps being discharged in May of 1948 and then again with the Marine Reserves where he was discharged in November 1962.

Many neighborhoods plan special events such as block parties and cookouts. If yours is one of those, the Rowlett Police, Fire, Parks & Recreation, and Public Works Departments would love the opportunity to drop in and visit with everyone. They can bring the SWAT vehicle, squad cars, fire engines, large construction vehicles and more for kids (and adults!) to climb on, into and enjoy.
