Native American Heritage MonthThe water tower is lit in red this week, November 13 – 19, in honor of Native American Heritage Month and to bring awareness to the plight of missing and murdered Indigenous women. Indigenous women are murdered at a rate that is more than ten times the national average. Some tribes believe red is the only color spirits see and by displaying red it is hoped that the missing spirits of women can be found and laid to rest. We light the tower in red in their honor and as a symbol of Rowlett’s commitment to supporting equity and inclusion for ALL of our diverse community members whose influential and lasting contributions to our City play a vital role in making Rowlett THE place to live, work and play.

Life Saving Awards This week, the Communications Department (911 Dispatch) held its annual meeting and presented Communications Officers Moore and Cook with Life Saving Awards for their actions during a call for service on April 18, 2022. The victim was unable to communicate clearly with the Communication Officers, and if it wasn’t for their quick actions in determining the victim’s location, all while remaining calm for the duration of the call, the caller would have successfully committed suicide.

Turkey TipsMake your holiday meal memorable – and tasty – by following CDC’s tips to safely prepare and cook your Thanksgiving turkey. If you don’t have a food thermometer at home, pick one up before Turkey Day and use it to make sure foods have been cooked to a safe internal temperature. Follow these tips to help you safely prepare your next holiday meal:
- Thaw your turkey safely, which means never leave it out on the counter at room temperature. Place it in a container in the refrigerator.
- Handle your turkey the right way — clean, separate, cook, and chill — to prevent the spread of bacteria.
- Cook turkey and stuffing thoroughly, to 165°F.
- If you plan to bake, do not eat raw dough or batter, and use pasteurized eggs in dishes that call for raw eggs.
